"The main difference between point marking and level marking is that in level marking, an examiner is looking at the whole of an answer and not just particular points, i.e. the examiner adopts a holistic approach, making an overall judgement about the quality of an answer.

An examiner would read the whole of the answer and then decide on a level on the basis of the level descriptors in the mark scheme. Once the level has been determined, the examiner then decides where exactly within a level an answer should be placed and then awards the response a mark."
